The Libby who stole the simple joy of a Christmas tree

Sometimes, I don’t even know why I bother to put a Christmas tree up. I take that back. I do know why I put a Christmas tree up. It’s because I love the warmth of this gigantic fake tree that takes up like 1/3 of my living room. I love coming home at night and turning off all the lights and letting the tree make my living room glow. It’s so relaxing and peaceful. I like wrapping presents and placing them under the tree so it doesn’t look quite so bare.

That’s in theory.

Then I remember why I don’t like putting a Christmas tree up. Their names are Maggie & Libby, aka my cats. Maggie really isn’t so bad. I will find her just lounging under the tree, hanging out most of the time. She threw up behind it one day, but that was easily fixed. Not gladly fixed, mind you. Libby on the other hand, is a terror. I used to have this cheapy $20 practically Charlie Brown tree that I bought at Big Lots and used for 2 years. I’m not quite sure how it stood up, but it did somehow. Until Libby decided to scale it like my brother Ryan does mountains. It would come crashing down, taking with it bulbs and ribbon.

This year, luckily she cannot tip it over. But she has decided that the presents are her personal playground. I will come home and find random bows from presents laying on my living room floor. There are always fake needles throughout my kitchen. She even manages to take some of the bottom branches out, and they will be on the floor. Best of all is her destruction of the presents. Oh, Lord.

I can hear her at night when I am trying to sleep, running back and forth from under the tree, on top of the presents, into my bedroom, onto my bed and back again. It’s like a mini-feline marathon or something. But I have also come to notice the uncanny sound of paper wripping. The evidence? This morning I found a present that very clearly had holes in the paper. What was this gift? My mom’s cupcake tins (which she asked for, thank you). Libby must have been galavanting and inserted her paw into a few of the cupcake holes. I’m trying to decide if I want to rewrap this present or just leave it be and give it to my mom like that for laugh value.

It goes without saying that I take the presents that I want to remain somewhat intact – those that go to Michael, Clara & Luke – out from under the tree and stash them in the closet.

This weekend I am going to my mom’s house in Big Rapids for two nights. I think I’ve pretty much decided to either put the gifts in a big pile away from the tree, or to stash them into a closet. I do not want to come home on Sunday night with one eye covered in fear of the destruction.

She also figured out last night how to unravel the ribbon from the tree. I have since taken the end piece and thrown it up around the top to get her to leave it alone. Somehow, I think this isn’t going to work.
